CASTING ON
There are several methods of casting on, some give a stronger
bottom edge than others, but every method starts with a slip knot. A slip knot
is ideal, but any loosely tied knot will do to start with.
When casting on, make sure you keep the stitches loose.
Casting on with 2 needles – Knitted cast on
Method
- Place the slip knot onto the left needle.
- Slide the right needle up from the front through the stitch so it sits behind and the needles are crossed.
- Take the yarn in your right hand and wrap anti-clockwise (from right to left) around the right needle from the back to the front.
- Slide the needle back and down - through the knot, catching the yarn you have just wrapped around on the point of the right needle.
- Slip the stitch off the right needle onto the left needle.
Casting on with 2 needles – Cable cast on
- Work as Knitted cast on, but after Step 5 work as follows:
- Place the right needle between the first and second stitch. Take the yarn and wrap it around the right needle as before.
- Bring the right needle through to the front catching the new loop on the tip, and slip the stitch onto the left hand needle.
- Repeat Steps 2 & 3 until required number of stitches are made.
